Day 1
Depart London 08.00. A two and a half-hour morning journey will take
us by freeway to Wales where our first stop will be at the border town
of Welshpool. Here we'll visit Powis castle and take an early lunch.
Then we enjoy the first of our many scenic drives. This takes us alongside
the majestic Lake Vernwy and thence by real back roads across the mid
Wales moor-lands to the southern tip of the Snowdonia National Park
and our two night accommodation stop.
Day 2
Today, we'll enjoy a day gently exploring the National Park and its
astounding beauty. There'll be time for walking
and for exploring some of the great Norman castles and ancient towns
of the region at leisure. Harlech, Betwys-y-Coed, mount Snowdon, Caernarfon
and Portmerion are on today's itinerary as is a woollen mill and some
shopping opportunities!
Day 3
Leaving North Wales behind us, we head back down into mid-Wales. Much
of the stunning countryside we'll pass through is open moorland, scored
by the occasional river valley. Our first stop will be at the town of
Llanidloes, with its striking black and white half-timbered 16th Century
market hall. Continuing our journey south, we pass through the charming
spa towns of Llandrindod Wells and Builth Wells, taking lunch where
appropriate. Our final highlight of the day's memorable touring will
be at the market town of Brecon. Highlights can include the interesting
military museum featuring the Zulu Wars, or perhaps the fine Roman museum.
There's also the local cathedral to view.
Day 4
We'll begin our day with some time exploring this, the used-book capital
of the world where even the local castle dungeon and disused cinema
house books by the thousand!
Then we take one of the UK's most scenic and outstanding drives between
the Black Mountains, past Llantony Priory and the ill-famed Skirrid
Inn (Wales oldest inn and site of executions). Following a short stop
at Monmouth, home or Mr Rolls and Henry V, we follow the river Wye through
breathtaking autumnal scenery, stopping to admire Tintern Abbey (as
did Wordsworth) and, if time, either the Roman ruins of Caerwent or
Chepstow Castle before joining the freeway for our 2 hour drive to London.
We aim to be in London by approx. 6 to 7 PM allowing us to make the
most of this day which provides a fitting climax to your Welsh experience.
