The village has been considered the perfect setting for many movies and television drama including Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and the harry Potter movies.
The tour then moves on to Malmesbury, the oldest borough in England, it has changed little in the last 100 years. It is an ancient hilltop market town whose chief attraction is its fine, old partially-ruined but beautiful abbey. It is an ancient hilltop market town whose chief attraction is its fine, old, partially-ruined but beautiful abbey.
Driving into the Cotswolds Hills our journey will explore the very best of this delightful region near the heart of England and a selection of its most picturesque villages. The tour will visit Burford, a leading wool town in the 14th century with wonderful half timbered buildings. The pretty villages of Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter are about a mile apart.
Lower Slaughter as the name implies is downstream of Upper Slaughter, and the river is a feature of the village as it flows between neatly mown grass banks. At nearly 800 feet, Stow-on-the-Wold is the highest town in the Cotswolds. It's Royal Charter was granted in 1107, and it has been an important Cotswold cross roads for a thousand years. Round the picturesque square, pubs and tea rooms, shops and hotels jostle for space.
The tour then visits the most famous prehistoric monument in the world - Stonehenge. This structure remains one of the great unsolved unsolved mysteries of the world. Some of the stones weigh over 50 tonnes and transported from the Preseli Mountains in Wales. Although the reasons behind Stonehenge remain shrouded in mystery many experts now believe it is a monument for astronomy. Come and marvel at this remarkable feat of ancient engineering.
We then arrive at the location of our overnight stop - the ancient Roman city of Bath with its beautiful architecture. The city of Bath is unique in the U.K as the only Hot Springs in the country. A quarter of a million gallons of water pour from the springs every day at a constant temperature of 45.6 degrees. As evening approaches the flares and torches that encircle the Baths are lit and we enjoy a private viewing followed by a Champagne reception.
The next morning our tour proceeds to Windsor Castle where over 900 years of royal history is awaiting you. From William the Conqueror all the way through to our current Queen, successive monarchs have lived in what is now the largest continuously occupied castle in the world. Windsor itself is a pretty town full of traditional shops and historic pubs. Shakespeare is said to have written his play The Merry Wives of Windsor in one of them!
