Hever
- We
leave the hustle and bustle of London and drive
into the Kent countryside to visit Hever Castle.
Hever was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, second
wife of Henry VIII. The castle was acquired by
William Waldorf Astor in 1903 who invested time,
money and imagination in restoring the building to
its former glory and creating the magnificent
gardens.
The
award-winning gardens have now reached their full
maturity and are a blaze of colour for most of the
year. The spectacular Italian Garden, the Long
herbaceous Border, the Rose and Tudor gardens are
all a must to visit as well as the yew maze and a
35 acre lake.
Chartwell
- In the
afternoon we continue on to Chartwell, family home
of Sir Winston Churchill. There you will find a
fascinating collection of Churchill memorabilia and
some fine gardens with magnificent
views.
Sir Winston
lived in the partly Tudor, partly Victorian country
house from 1924 until his death. The rooms remain
much as he left them and contain pictures, maps and
personal mementoes.
We return
to London after a very interesting day out to
commence drop-offs, traffic permitting at about
18:30.
